Out of the darkness
An Exhibition of Youth Perspectives on Tairāwhiti in a Changing Climate
A collaboration between local photographer Josie McClutchie and award-winning sociologist, Professor Holly Thorpe (University of Waikato), this exhibition amplifies the voices of rangatahi through the lens of sport. The unique juxtaposition of powerful images of young people in the places they love, accompanied by text from in-depth interviews, prompts new perspectives on the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle and repeated weather events on local youth.
With 24 black-and-white photos and quotes from our research, ‘Out of the Darkness’ reveals how climate change is shaping the lives of local rangatahi in Tairāwhiti Gisborne.
It showcases their courage, strength, resilience and passion.

An Exhibition of Youth Perspectives on Tairāwhiti in a Changing Climate
The ‘Out of the Darkness’ Exhibition creates a dynamic space to learn from, and be moved by, rangatahi knowledge and experiences of climate change.
It was created to be mobile, and with the generous support of Lotteries Grant it is on the move around the region, to schools, marae and sports clubs. The idea is to center rangatahi voices and experiences, and to spark new conversations, awareness, understanding & action.
